Pilot action in Utrecht: Beurskwartier
The city of Utrecht is committed to fostering an inclusive, sustainable, and innovative city. Utrecht aims to create a high-quality living environment that prioritizes the well-being and equal opportunities of all residents. The city seeks to collaborate with citizens and businesses to build a future-proof urban area.
As Utrecht experiences rapid growth and increased density, there is a pressing need to manage heat stress and expand green spaces, particularly in high-density areas like 'Beurskwartier', near Central Station. This district will be the site of Utrecht's pilot project, which will focus on mobility and environment. This also means considering the impact of future spatial developments on the 'Beurskwartier' area (see images below).
It is crucial to empower residents to participate in policy development regarding their living environment. In designing the city, we must carefully balance housing, mobility, and climate considerations. Utilizing a 3D digital twin model to display the detailed consequences of planned developments makes it easier for residents to understand and evaluate future projects. This digital representation enables Utrecht and other cities to experiment, discuss, and develop virtual plans, ideas, and scenarios in collaboration with planners, stakeholders, and citizens.
In the 3D visualization you can really experience high-rise buildings by walking through them and seeing the effects of sun and shadow. This is interesting for residents, but also for landscape architects when determining tree species.
